Jeg vil dele mit vigtigste redskab i al mit samvær med børn og unge – FORSTÅELSE. Forståelse er the key til at hjælpe de yngre med at komme ovenpå igen, efter fx raserianfald, ked-af-det-hed osv. Forståelse skaber den ro, der er nødvendig, for at fornuften kan komme på banen – hvad enten det er barnets egen fornuft eller den voksnes gode råd. Tal ikke fornuft og brug ikke en masse ord til et barn, der er ude af sig selv af hidsighed, sorg osv. Oftest vil ordene blot virke som brændstof til deres vilde følelser. Hvordan modtager vi selv velmenende råd eller bebrejdelser, når vi er ude af balance – hånden på hjertet, det er vist sjældent med et “tusind tak, det var lige det, jeg havde brug for.” Når vores temperament koger allermest, ønsker de fleste blot en skulder at læne sig opad og en atmosfære, der kan rumme vores frustration.
Prøv at gøre det i hverdagen, når du kan. Det er helt enkle ord, som kan virke nærmest mirakuløst beroligende – sig fx “Jeg forstår godt, du ked af det” eller “Jeg har også prøvet det, og jeg blev også rigtig rasende.” Lad det være dét, indtil der er kommet helt ro på. Altså ikke noget med lige at lade de søde ord følges af “men prøv nu alligevel lige…” eller “du kan da også nok forstå” – selvom det kan være så fristende med vores evindelige voksenlogik.
